Tail Lift vs Forklift: What to Confirm for Lorry Loading

A tail lift and a forklift serve different purposes when loading and unloading a lorry. Choosing the right enquiry depends on the goods, the site facilities and who provides the equipment at each end.

Tail lift: a truck-mounted loading platform

A tail lift (also called a liftgate) is a lifting platform mounted on a lorry. It raises and lowers goods between the ground and the vehicle's loading level. Liftgate configurations vary by model, platform size and mounting position; the rated capacity is specific to the equipment fitted to the assigned vehicle.

A tail-lift lorry is useful when there is no loading dock at the pickup or delivery location. The platform moves goods vertically between ground level and the truck bed. It does not move goods horizontally across a site, stack them at height or position them inside a premises. Confirm the fitted platform's capacity and dimensions for your actual load before booking.

Forklift: separate lifting and placement equipment

A forklift is a separate powered machine used to lift, move and stack goods. It operates independently from the lorry and is not part of the tail-lift vehicle. Load suitability depends on the specific machine assigned, its data-plate rated capacity and how the load is positioned on the forks.

If goods need to be placed onto racking, moved across a warehouse floor or loaded from inside a container, a forklift addresses that work. Confirm which forklift model will be assigned, whether it suits the load weight and dimensions, and who provides and operates it at the site.

General reference: Toyota: load centre and capacity considerations. Specific capacities depend on the assigned machine, not general examples.

Loading bays and site facilities at each location

A loading bay or raised dock is part of the premises, rather than equipment supplied automatically with a lorry. Ask the venue whether the assigned vehicle can use it, what level and clearances apply, and which loading or bridging equipment and operator must be arranged.

Check pickup and delivery separately. One location may have facilities that the other lacks. Confirm the actual goods, vehicle, surface, doorway and overhead restrictions, time windows and handling responsibilities at each end. A raised dock alone does not establish compatibility or remove the need to confirm equipment.

Confirm equipment and handling at both ends

Record the loading method for each location separately. For each end, identify:

  • Whether the goods start or finish at ground level, loading-dock level or another height
  • The weight and external packed dimensions of the goods
  • What equipment is available at each site and who operates it
  • Who is responsible for loading, unloading, placing and securing the goods
  • Whether additional manpower is required at either location

The lorry's carrying capacity and any lifting equipment's rated capacity are separate specifications. A tail-lift platform rated for a particular weight does not establish the lorry's permitted cargo load, and vice versa. Share each item's weight and dimensions so the provider can confirm both the vehicle and the equipment are suitable.

Record your requirements in the loading brief

Use the printable brief below to record the loading and handling details for both your pickup and delivery locations. Leave items you have not confirmed blank rather than guessing. Share the completed brief with your quote request so the provider can confirm the vehicle, equipment and arrangements.

The lorry size guide compares cargo-bay dimensions for choosing a vehicle. The forklift rental pricing guide explains equipment, operator and transport quotation scope. This guide concerns the loading method at each location, which is a separate decision from vehicle size or forklift pricing.

FAQ

Questions before you book

Question not listed? Ask us on WhatsApp

Does a tail lift replace a forklift?

No. A tail lift raises or lowers goods between the ground and the vehicle’s loading level. A suitable forklift can lift, move or place goods separately around the site. Confirm the equipment and handling arrangements needed at pickup and delivery; neither replaces every task performed by the other.

Who provides the loading equipment?

That depends on the arrangement. The lorry provider may supply a tail-lift lorry. A forklift may be available at the venue, hired separately or supplied by the transport provider. State what equipment you need and confirm who provides and operates it in your written quote.

How do I confirm the tail-lift capacity for my load?

Share the weight and dimensions of the heaviest item or pallet that will use the platform. Ask the provider to confirm the fitted tail-lift platform's rated capacity and dimensions. Do not assume the lorry's cargo capacity equals the tail-lift platform's lifting capacity.
